Welcome to MVSA Softball
The MVSA spring softball program fields teams for ages 7-9 and 10-13. Ages 7-9 play coach-pitch while girls 10-13 play kid fastpitch. This allows players to learn fastpitch at their appropriate skill level. Plus, girls learn to pitch the correct way in preparation for more competitive softball. Registration for the spring season is now open and runs through mid March. Depending on registration levels, the league usually has six to eight teams. Pre-Formed Teams: MVSA Softball welcomes pre-formed teams. Pre-formed teams can include up to nine players in the spring and must be willing to accept additional players to accommodate individual regirstrations. Players on pre-formed teams must be registered by February 28 for spring softball. If you are interested in a pre-formed team, please contact the MVSA Spring Softball Commissioner.
The format for the league is two games a week, played in the afternoon as double-headers on either Saturday or Sunday. Alternately, teams may play a weekday game if weather results in cancellations of weekend games. There are a total of ten to twelve games in the season with a playoff tournament to crown a champion. Sometimes MVSA teams participate in a league with teams from other nearby organizations.
MVSA Softball Fees:
Montgomery Village Resident $80
Non-Resident $85
Residents must have a Montgomery Village address, a 20886 zip code, and pay Montgomery Village homeowner's fees. There are no family fees, time-or-dime fees, or park usage fees. The above is the total price to play MVSA softball.
Player Evaluations: If necessary, depending on the number of registrations, players not on a pre-formed team will be evaluated for their throwing, catching, and hitting skills, and scored on a common scale. These evaluations are then used by the coaches to draft new teams or complete pre-formed teams. The draft is conducted using the scores as a basis for ensuring teams are equally balanced. The goal of this evaluation and draft process is to attempt to get teams as balanced as possible with respect to talent.
Carpools: MVSA will honor carpool requests to the extent practical to do so.
Equipment: MVSA provides basic equipment for teams. This includes catcher's gear, bats, practice and game balls, and a team shirt. In addition, MVSA fields provide additional equipment such as pitching machines, practices tees, wiffle balls, and bases. Players should provide gloves and cleats.
Game Schedules: The majority of MVSA games are played at either the Patsy Huson Field or South Valley Park. Spring games are played as double-headers starting at 1:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Teams will practice once or twice a week depending on the number of games they play during the week. The spring schedule accommodates high school sports on Saturdays and church services on Sundays. Games may start earlier on Sundays or be played on weekdays to accommodate rain-postponed games on a weekend. Plus, special circumstances such as SAT exams may require games solely on Sunday. Following the end of the regular season, a double- or single-elimination tournament is played.
At times, MVSA will work with other athletic groups geographically near MVSA to develop inter-league play. This allows for greater variety and competition for MVSA teams. In the past, MVSA has played games against teams from the Germantown Athletic Club, the Olney Boys and Girls Club, and the Damascus Softball Association.
Field Locations: MVSA plays the majority of its games on two Montgomery Village fields, Patsy Huson located at 20300 Fulks Farm Road, Montgomery Village, and South Valley Park located at 19001 Watkins Mill Road, Montgomery Village.
