Welcome to MVSA Softball
The MVSA fall softball program fields teams that provide an opportunity for high school players to maintain their skills and an opportunity for younger players to raise their level of play. Registration for the fall season opens in the spring of that year. The league has six to eight teams.
The format for the league is two games a week, played in the afternoon as double-headers on either Saturday or Sunday. Alternately, teams may play a weekday game if weather results in cancellations of weekend games. There are a total of ten to twelve games in the season with a playoff tournament to crown a champion. This page provides basic information on the MVSA fall softball league, including registration, pre-formed teams, fees, player evaluations, carpools, equipment, game schedules, and field locations. If you still have questions regarding fall softball, please contact the MVSA Softball Commissioner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Registration: Registration for fall softball usually opens the season prior to the playing season. Fall league registration usually opens in late April before the end of school and runs through the end of July.
Pre-Formed Teams: MVSA Softball welcomes preformed teams in both the spring and fall league. Pre-formed teams can include up to eight players in the fall. Spaces are left on pre-formed teams to ensure players who are not affiliated with a team have a place to play. Players on pre-formed teams must be registered by July 15 for fall softball. Pre-formed teams are especially attractive in our fall league, where high school teams can stay together as a unit to play in the off season. If you are interested in a pre-formed team, please contact the MVSA Softball Commissioner.
MVSA Softball Fees:
Montgomery Village Resident $95
Non-Resident $100
Residents must have a Montgomery Village address, a 20886 zip code, and pay Montgomery Village homeowner's fees. There are no family fees, time-or-dime fees, or park usage fees. The above is the total price to play MVSA softball.
Player Evaluations: If necessary, depending on the number of registrations, players not on a pre-formed team will be evaluated for their throwing, catching, and hitting skills, and scored on a common scale. These evaluations are then used by the coaches to draft new teams or complete pre-formed teams. The draft is conducted using the scores as a basis for ensuring the teams are equally balanced. The goal of this evaluation and draft process is to attempt to get teams as balanced as possible with respect to talent.
Carpools: MVSA will honor carpool requests to the extent practical to do so.
Equipment: MVSA provides basic equipment for teams. This includes catcher's gear, bats, practice and game balls, and a team shirt. In addition, MVSA fields provide additional equipment such as pitching machines, practices tees, wiffle balls, and bases. Players should provide gloves and cleats. Because many fall players are travel or varsity high school players, most use their personal equipment in our fall league.
Game Schedules: A majority of MVSA games are played at either the Patsy Huson Field or South Valley Park. Fall games are played as double-headers starting at 1:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Teams will practice once or twice a week depending on the number of games they play during the week. The fall schedule accommodates fall high school sports on Saturdays and church services on Sundays. Games may start earlier on Sundays or be played on weekdays to accommodate rain-postponed games on a weekend. Plus, special circumstances such as homecomings or SAT exams may require games solely on Sunday. Following the end of the regular season, a double- or single-elimination tournament is played.
At times, MVSA will work with other athletic groups geographically near MVSA to develop inter-league play. This allows for greater variety and competition for MVSA teams. In the past, MVSA has played games against teams from the Germantown Athletic Club, the Olney Boys and Girls Club, and the Damascus Softball Association.
Field Locations: MVSA plays a majority of its games on two Montgomery Village fields, Patsy Huson located at 20300 Fulks Farm Road, Montgomery Village, and South Valley Park located at 19001 Watkins Mill Road, Montgomery Village.

Fall Softball A Big Hit With Players and Parents
Our fall program has six to eight MVSA teams playing in it with nearly 100 girls. Many players come from high-school teams while some are younger travel ball players. Both are looking to improve their skills in the off season. Overall, the experience of a majority of players and parents was extremely positive. Here are just a few thoughts from the evaluations provided following the end of our fall Season.
- We have, and will continue to recommend MVSA to others.
- Great experience for Katelyn! I feel this will help her in getting ready for the high school team.
- This was our first experience with MVSA having come from another program and we were more than pleased. If there continues to be a team for the older girls my daughter will play.
- It was a very positive experience. Allowing kids to play with their classmates and friends (rather than a draft) is a good idea for Fall Ball. Keep up the good work.
- They are all 5's. I couldn't fill in the blanks and send back. Our coach was an amazing coach and it seems they all are. What a great experience. I just wish it had been a little closer to our houses to drive.
- I think that they did a really good job this year, and it was alot better than when I played 3yrs ago my freshman year.
- The coach was a phenomenal coach who welcomed my daughter, who was new to the team, and made her feel comfortable.
- No [ways to improve program], thought program was excellent. I just want to say something about our coach. My daughter, Becca, has played on many teams since 3rd grade, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, softball and without exaggeration, The MVSA coach was by far, hands down, the best coach she has ever had. She learned more about softball than she did playing on her high school j.v. team last spring. He was extraordinarily patient, kind, organized, and encouraging with the kids. I thought his practices were great. It was truly a pleasure watching him coach. You could not ask for a better coach. Becca really, really enjoyed being with him.
- Terrific program, coaches for the most part are very positive. Our coach was particularly motivating and positive, and gave constructive criticism but never made the girls feel like they are not part of the team. He motivated them to want to produce for him. Great year.
